The edge lit vs backlit choice changes the construction you need to show a lighting supplier. An edge-lit display introduces light from the panel edge; a backlit arrangement places the source behind the visible face. Before asking for a silicone section or a finished light, identify which construction your display maker intends to use.
AlisterTech can discuss silicone lighting profiles, empty housings and selected lighting assemblies against your drawing or sample. The quotation needs to identify those components separately from the light-guide panel, graphics, frame, power equipment and site work. A silicone profile quotation does not define an entire illuminated display.
Start With the Panel Construction
In an edge-lit construction, the relationship between the light source and the panel edge matters. A backlit construction needs a defined cavity behind the face and a source arrangement suited to that space. These principles are also described in NVC's explanation of edge-lit and back-lit panels. Do not transfer another manufacturer's panel thickness or performance claims to your own display.
Send a section through the frame, panel and proposed light location. Include the face material, visible opening and the location of the power connection. A front-view rendering explains appearance but cannot establish the hidden space available for the light or its ends.
| Quotation detail | Edge-lit construction | Backlit construction |
|---|---|---|
| Source location | At the panel edge | Behind the visible face |
| Drawing to provide | Panel edge, source position and retention detail | Cavity, source arrangement and face position |
| Sample questions | Coupling, bright edges and shadows | Visible source pattern, joins and dark areas |
| Silicone component check | Internal fit and emitting face relative to the edge | Profile space, light direction and connection access |
| Separate supply items | Light-guide panel, graphic and frame | Face, backing, frame and any separate optical parts |
Agree the Lighting Component Supply
Use LED silicone tubes when you need an empty housing for a separately selected source. If you need the source included, review the LED Neon Flex configuration instead. Neither route guarantees a particular panel brightness or uniformity without checking the display construction.
For a profile that must change around the installation interface, send the section to Custom Silicone Extrusion. Mark critical dimensions and identify the strip you intend to use. Do not select solely by the external width: internal clearance, retention, source position and end space also affect assembly.
Use a Representative Display Sample
Review a sample with the intended panel or face, actual light source, profile and mounting arrangement. Compare the centre, edges and any connections from the buyer's expected viewing position. Photograph alternatives with consistent exposure so a camera adjustment does not appear to be an improvement in the product.
Record the components and operating setting with the preferred sample. If the source, profile or face changes, confirm whether another review is needed. Where the buyer requires measured brightness or uniformity, specify the method and acceptance requirement separately; a photograph is not a measurement report.
Bring the Section to AlisterTech
Our manufacturing information provides processing and assembly context for a component discussion. The useful starting point is a drawing that shows how the selected silicone section fits the display, including the cable exit and access for replacement.
Request applicable product files through Technical Resources. Include the number of repeated displays and the ordered segment lengths so that standard and special ends can be identified in the offer. Confirm which parts are included before treating two quotations as equivalent.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between edge lit and backlit?
Edge-lit construction introduces light at a panel edge. Backlit construction positions the source behind the visible face. The panel, optical arrangement and installation detail determine the result.
Does a silicone diffuser replace a light-guide panel?
Do not assume it does. A silicone diffuser and a display light-guide panel have different roles. Show the intended construction and identify each component separately in the quotation.
Can AlisterTech supply a housing without the LEDs?
Yes, an empty silicone housing can be reviewed for a separately selected strip. Send the source dimensions, section, light direction and connection requirements so fit can be checked.
Which construction gives better uniformity?
The label alone cannot decide that for your display. Review the actual source, panel or face, mounting arrangement and sample. Any measured acceptance requirement must be defined for the proposed construction.
What should a display-lighting enquiry include?
Send the display section, panel or face information, source requirements, desired appearance, cable exits, segment lengths and quantity. List the frame, optical parts, power equipment and other items supplied by others.
