LED Strip Lifespan: Review L70, LM-80 and the Supply Evidence

A useful LED strip lifespan quotation explains which product the claim covers, how its operating conditions were defined and which documents support it. An hours figure on its own is not enough to compare a bare strip with a complete silicone lighting assembly. Ask AlisterTech to review your configuration, installation conditions and documentation needs together before approving the supply.

Ask what the quoted life actually describes

The LED package, strip circuit, silicone housing, connections and power equipment are different parts of the assembly. A supplier's statement may describe only one of them. Start by asking for the exact configuration reference and the meaning of the quoted endpoint: light-output maintenance, a defined failure criterion or a separate commercial warranty.

L70 describes a lumen-maintenance threshold of 70% of the initial light output. It does not mean that every component will operate without failure until that point. Where a lifetime statement uses a projection, the documentation should identify the method, supporting measurements and reporting limits that apply.

The Illuminating Engineering Society's position on LED product lifetime distinguishes LED-component lumen maintenance from complete-luminaire reliability. Buyers should therefore request evidence for the level of product being offered, rather than treating a component document as a blanket guarantee for the assembly.

Read LM-80 evidence at the correct product level

LM-80 is a measurement method for LED packages, arrays and modules. TM-21 provides a method of projecting longer-term lumen maintenance from relevant data. Neither name, by itself, establishes a finished light's service life or certifies AlisterTech as a company.

When a quotation references those documents, ask how the tested source relates to the exact product supplied and how the stated operating conditions were assessed. Keep the test duration distinct from any projected period. Request the relevant document edition and the basis for the reported result instead of copying an unexplained number from a brochure.

Supplier statement or fileWhat the buyer should check
LM-80 reportSource identity, measured conditions and whether it matches the proposed configuration
TM-21 projectionInput data, applicable method and limits of the reported projection
Finished-assembly claimWhich parts and operating conditions are included, and what evidence applies to that assembly
Appearance approvalAgreed light face, colour and sample conditions; separate from long-term performance evidence
WarrantyWritten period, scope, exclusions and remedy for the quoted supply
Purchase specificationWhich requirements are confirmed values and which still need supporting information

The DOE-hosted guide to LED luminaire lifetime discusses multiple failure mechanisms beyond the LED source. It is background guidance, not a report for an AlisterTech product. Product-specific documents need their own review.

Give the supplier the conditions behind the requirement

A display operating for short daily periods and a continuously illuminated enclosed feature do not present the same brief. Provide expected operating hours, the actual environment, mounting arrangement, available heat path, power/control equipment and access for service. Describe cleaning and moisture exposure where relevant.

For a strip inside a housing, identify the PCB width, component arrangement and profile section. The surrounding assembly affects how the source operates. Use the heat-dissipation planning guide to assemble those inputs; do not assume that a material name establishes the complete assembly's operating temperature.

Appearance also deserves its own requirement. A buyer may care about colour change, visible light continuity or the housing surface as well as lumen maintenance. The silicone appearance and yellowing guide addresses the questions to clarify for that part of the supply. An approved appearance sample does not substitute for lifespan evidence.

Review the physical product and the document set together

AlisterTech's manufacturing page shows processing and assembly activities, while the quality-control page explains a product-specific review approach. This gives buyers a basis to discuss section dimensions, strip fit, connection details and the inspection scope to agree for their order.

For your project, link the approved drawing and sample to the exact supply reference. Identify which dimensions, connection details and supplied formats have been agreed. If the housing changes, discuss the custom extrusion requirements and whether the change affects the source arrangement or the documents being relied on.

AlisterTech supplies silicone tubes and profiles as well as finished lighting formats. The empty housing has no LED lumen-maintenance value of its own. If you are buying LED Neon Flex, identify the integrated source and finished configuration in the quotation rather than carrying over a claim from an unrelated strip.

Turn a lifespan target into a clear quotation requirement

Tell us the intended application, configuration if selected, operating hours, mounting/environment conditions, quantity and destination. Add any required lifetime definition, warranty terms or documentation specified by your customer. If a supporting report is not yet available, retain it as a requirement to resolve rather than treating it as an approved result.

Ask Technical Resources which documents apply to the proposed product. A representative sample can help review the agreed assembly and initial operation; the strip-testing guide discusses that separate acceptance task. A short sample check cannot prove years of operation.

When comparing offers, use the same product scope and evidence requirements for each supplier. Send your product and documentation brief so AlisterTech can discuss the silicone lighting supply and the information required before you place the order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do LED strip lights last?

There is no single supported lifespan for every LED strip or finished assembly. Review the exact configuration, operating conditions, defined endpoint and available evidence. Ask the supplier to distinguish measured data, projections and warranty terms before relying on a quoted number of hours.

What is L70?

L70 is a lumen-maintenance threshold of 70% of initial light output. It concerns light-output maintenance, not a promise that every component will remain operational until that point. A reported time to L70 needs its supporting method, conditions and scope identified.

Does an LM-80 report establish the life of a complete silicone lighting assembly?

No. LM-80 concerns LED packages, arrays and modules. A finished assembly also includes other parts and operating conditions that can affect service life. Ask how the report relates to the selected source and what additional evidence supports any finished-product claim.

What operating conditions should accompany a supplier’s lifespan claim?

Ask for the source and assembly references, electrical conditions, relevant thermal conditions, operating schedule and defined performance endpoint. Provide your mounting arrangement, environment and equipment details so the supplier can identify the applicable evidence and any unresolved requirements.

Does a physical sample or factory photograph prove a lifetime claim?

No. A sample can support fit, appearance and agreed initial checks, and a real factory photograph can show a visible process or assembly detail. Long-term performance and warranty claims require their own applicable documents and written scope for the quoted product.
